Homeschool Math classes: Saxon

Saxon Math has been around since the dawn of time.  Well....not really but it seems like it!  Saxon teaches math following the spiral method of teaching.  This means that your little Johnny will learn a bite sized new concept everyday and then practice what has been taught before.

In the Saxon online math class, I will present the new ideas for the week to the class and then the rest of class time we will spend answering questions, performing thinking exercises, and then I will spend some one on one time with students who need a little extra tutoring.  A list of daily assignments will be given out.  Students will be expected to return the the completed assignment to me in about 5 days.  I will then go over the work and give out grades if the parent wishes.

I look forward to seeing you all there!!!

How Does Online Tutoring and Instruction Work?

Online tutoring and classes take place using just your computer and internet connection.  I use a service called E-Lecta Virtual Classroom.  The website includes a "whiteboard", session recording, and screen sharing.  It is just like being in the same room with one another, but with no wasted gas or time spent driving to the session.
The advantage of an interactive class is the ability to get questions answered right away, fix incorrect thinking, and to benefit from the questions of other classmates. How many times has another person in a meeting or a class asked a question and you thought to yourself "Yeah, right! I need to know that too!". You didn't know you didn't know until someone else pointed it out!

The class meets at a prearranged time right in the online classroom.  I, as the teacher, controls who has access to this room.  No one who is not enrolled in the course will be allowed entrance.  I will monitor all discussions.  There is no extra cost to gain access to the online classroom.

I will use the online whiteboard and a microphone to conduct the class.  Your teen's computer screen will display what I am drawing on the whiteboard as I draw it.  If your student has a question, they "raise their hand", just like in a real classroom.  When I "call on them" they can ask their question.

Recordings of each class will be available for those who cannot attend a session and for review of material if the student needs it while working on the assignments for the week.
