Math Classes

I will be offering 5 styles of homeschool online math classes during the 2012-2013 school year:

  •  Pre-Algebra
  •  Saxon Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra
  • Saxon Algebra
  • YOUR choice Pre-algebra or Algebra
Why do I offer different curriculum choices?  Because there are many different ideologies for teaching math.  I believe that a teacher must be flexible when teaching and that an advantage of homeschool classes is that the teacher and parent may work together to choose the order and timing that best fits the students needs.  So, I have choosen to teach three types of classes:

  •  Saxon math classes, for reasons I will state below
  • Parent choice math class, where the parent chooses the curriculum
  • My choice-using a combination of materials that will best fit the unique combination of enrolled students.
Read on for explanations of both types of courses.

Why Saxon?  Saxon is a very popular and well respected curriculum used in public, private, and homeschools around the world. It works very well for the student who "gets" math or for those who need variety. It utilizes the spiral methodology of teaching math. Each day a new bit of math is introduced and a few sample problems given. The rest of the lesson practices what was introduced in the prior lessons. There is alot of variety in each days selection of problems and this helps keep the student interested.  Lots of practice with previously introducted concepts, help the student master them and don't allow the student to forget what they have learned.

If your student learns better by studying a topic to mastery, then the "My Choice" Algebra class is for them. We will study each area of algebra throughly, moving on when the topic has been mastered.
This allows me to focus on problem areas, but I can also move on if a concept needs little time.

The YOUR choice class is for those who have a certain curriculum already in mind.  The class can be put on with as little as 5 students.  If you have a group of friends who would like to use an online teacher for their teens, but want to use a specific curriculum other than the ones listed here, contact me and if you have a class of at least 5 students, we will make it happen.   If you don't already have a group, we can work together to see if there are other interested parties.

Classes are conducted using WebEX and are given in an interactive format.  This alllows the student to ask me questions right when they think of it.   The advantage of an interactive class is the ability to get questions answered right away, fix incorrect thinking, and to benefit from the questions of other classmates.  How many times has another person in a meeting or a class asked a question and you thought to yourself "Yeah, right!  I need to know that too!".  You didn't know you didn't know until someone else pointed it out!

Schedule of Classes

The tentative schedule is as follows:

Pre-Algebra will meet Mondays at 9 am.
Saxon Pre-Algebra will meet Mondays at 11 am.
